Director of Engineering

We are seeking a Director of Engineering who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is hungry to be a hands-on leader, taking ownership of a fast-growing engineering team and driving execution against our technical roadmap. You will get to work across a wide spectrum of technologies and problems, and you likely consider yourself a Polyglot and aGeneralist. You are someone who is as comfortable solving problems in AWS as you are brainstorming with the QA team about how to best build and integrate an InventoryManagement system into our testing workflow. If you don’t understand how to make something work but are excited by the prospect of helping figure it out and take it to a production system, this role is for you. Your exploration and execution will help define what products we bring to market a year from now. You’re a tinkerer, and you’ve got an interest in what makes things work... The Director of Engineering is as much of a technical ninja as they are a business-minded strategic planner, with expert-level technology and communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly, concisely, informatively, tactfully, and effectively across all levels of the organization. The ideal candidate will exhibit strong communication skills especially amongst technical teams, and have the proven ability to align the organization on complex technical decisions. Furthermore, the Director of Engineering is an active coach and mentor whose goal is to grow and maximize the team’s potential.

Standard Salary Range: $175k - $215k Annually plus equity

Basic Requirements:

• 5+ years of software engineering experience in a team environment contributing to a shared codebase
• Fluency in Python
• Extensive experience with AWS Services, with specific hands-on experience in EC2, ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS/Aurora/postgres, Redis, Route53, and CloudFront
• Solid understanding of Database technologies such as SQL, pgSQL, and relational database schema design
• Track record of employing high-quality architectural principles, and identifying and choosing between multiple architectural options
• Experience delivering and owning web-scale data and infrastructure systems in production
• Demonstrable track record of successfully leading, managing, and mentoring engineering teams
• Demonstrable experience managing and contributing to technology solutions across the full stack (frontend, backend, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, etc)
• Experience implementing best practices for backend software development projects in a team environment (code reviews, style guides, unit and E2E test frameworks, etc)
• Experience with Git and both contributing to and managing CI/CD workflows
• English language proficiency
• Primary work location in Chicago, IL highly preferred

Preferred Requirements:

• Experience in managing IoT device fleets and related infrastructure
• Experience with cost-optimizing backend infrastructure
• Extensive experience with Docker and Kubernetes
• Extensive experience designing, developing, and tuning server-side applications, including in a cloud-based environment with high availability standards
• Understanding of multiple NOSQL database options in addition to relational databases, and experience making decisions on which to use for various use cases
• Familiarity with advanced, niche AWS services and database products
• Experience managing a constant stream of user feedback, and grooming that feedback into the engineering backlog
• Demonstrable experience successfully leading engineering teams through high-growth startup environments

• Own the architectural decisions for Ubiety’s engineering team. Be the visionary force behind technical solutions, driving the team’s engineering practices toward test driven development, continuous integration, automated deployment, and high availability.
• Provide the engineering team with a roadmap and toolkit for implementing best practices for software engineering toward higher code quality, test coverage, and continuous integration / continuous deployment
• Assist in preparing the long-term strategic plans for the engineering organization, and implement those plans across all engineering teams
• Facilitate agile ceremonies, manage an engineering backlog and release plan, track team-level metrics, and remove blockers (burndown chart, release burn up, etc)
• Actively participate in the design of product features, spanning across sensor hardware and software, backend and cloud infrastructure, APIs, and frontend (mobile app and web app)
• Collaborate on architecture definitions, always thinking of solutions that are scalable and secure
• Review teammates’ code, with emphasis on correctness of the implementation as well as performance, styling suggestions, and readability/maintainability
• Contribute ideas for what we should be building next to support our product, business, and infrastructure scalability goals
• Mentor and lead engineering team members
• Be highly autonomous; contribute your own ideas for what to build next, and ideas on how to improve the engineering team and the entire organization
